Why you should wear a crop top if you like crop tops

Do you like crop tops? Why?
That question is hard to answer for anything. From the first time the question “what’s your favourite colour?” is followed by “why?” you have to consider the reasons for your preferences. We are personally influenced, socially influenced, politically influenced. “Good” reasons for liking things are hard to distinguish from “bad” reasons. They’re all just reasons in the end.
But if the reason you like crop tops is broadly how they look, but the reason you are hesitant to wear them is because of how they look on you, please keep reading.
NOTE: please insert any given clothing item where I say crop top, they’re all relevant, but for the purposes of this piece I have chosen crop tops.
Crop tops are an exposing item of clothing and they expose what is probably one of the most criticised and commented on body parts, the belly. It is therefore understandable that they cause contention and you might think “that’s not for me.”
But who made these rules?
Anyone but you, that's who. Firstly, the idea that a belly is ugly is just bullshit. Bellies are beautiful, it’s the clothes that people put on them that are the problem, so surely a crop top perfectly avoids this problem by exposing the belly, the human body…? Anyway, I digress.
The reason why you should wear a crop top is that we learn from seeing just as we learn from being told, so if we see pictures and videos of flat stomachs in crop tops all the time, we learn that this is what bodies are supposed to look like inside of them. The only way to change that is for more people with stomachs that aren’t flat, and bodies that are not posted everywhere to wear crop tops. Ie - PUT IT ON.
A diversity of bodies in different clothing items is lacking in 2024, and each and every one of us can change this by just putting the clothes on our body. A revolutionary act, if you will.
It takes bravery, but that’s ok.
I want to caveat this by saying that if you don’t like crop tops of course there’s no need to wear them, and just because your stomach is flat does not mean that you are comfortable in one. My point is that if you do like an outfit but feel like perhaps your body isn’t made for it, the way to change that is by proving your body is made for it, and wearing the damn clothes.
So next time you’re wondering if you can really go out in that outfit you loved and planned that happens to contain a crop top, of course you freaking can, and of course you look great.
